Rope?
Not sure quite where to place this thread, but it's sort of a "Dear Marjorie" request, so the agony column seemed a good place.
So, why do some dommes insist on trying to tie you up with one loooong piece of rope. On several occasions I have been lying there, mentally tapping my fingers, whilst the domme tries for 10 minutes to sort out the tangle in the 50' of rope she is trying to use. Then it takes another half an hour to tie me up, as each time a limb is bound, the remaining 49' needs to be drawn through the loop or whatever. Also it never really gets tight, as there is always slack in the system? What is wrong with 5 or 6 (or more!) 4-6' pieces - ankles, knees, wrists, elbows...sorted! J |

Obviously, the Ladies can answer for themselves but I have a few thoughts.
1. Some simply aren't particularly good at it. They know enough to get by, but have to go slowly. My knowledge is very limited, but I do know that - like all other japanese arts - it takes much study and practice to acheive expertise. Experienced shibari practicioners can be quite brisk. One secret seems to be to use loops rather than constantly dragging loose ends through. 2. Some clients actually quite like the "business" of being tied up slowly and erotically. 3. If there are loose bits then it hasn'tr been done properly. 4. Some Ladies actually enjoy the process itself and like to draw it out for their own pleasure - and who are we to argus with their preferences? 5 If you find the process too slow - why not ask to be secured with straps or irons? I think the answer may be to take a knife or some scissors with you next time and just cut the rope up into some shorter pieces.

I have been tied by a Mistress who used one long rope to do so, she was execellant at the bondage and it didn't take me long to be totally restrained by her.
It was a lovely experience and the more I moved the more the rope seemed to tighten itself around me, something which delighted her no end.

Poshie's reply hits the nail on the head: some people like the whole process of being slowly restrained and immobilized in rope, others just want to be restrained, period. Rope bondage is for the former, the latter would be happier in cuffs or irons.
I am one of those who enjoy Japanese rope bondage and tying people up, and I love the whole process. It's inevitable to come across a tangled rope every now an then, but if it takes too long to get it ready, then you are doing it wrong. It happens occasionally, even to the best among us! I always advise against too long rope coils. My longest rope is 30 ft (10 m) long. Anything longer and it can easily become a tangled mess. When I run out of rope, a new length can be easily attached to its end, and proceed. Using separate sections also makes untying easier and faster! Some ropes tangle more easily than others: I'm not surprised that hemp is so popular, because it doens't tangle easily. Cotton is a real bitch, but man made fibres like polypropilene, are bondage-friendly and quite tangle-proof. Ultimately, if it's about the rope and the bondage, you have to find ways of making even the untying process, a fundamental part of the session. Teasing, tickling, trying nipple clamps and poking my specimens while untying it make for a delicious 2nd act to the bondage process |

Ah, well I am neither. As a pure "bottom" rather than a sub, I am not in scene until I am well and truly tied up...so the moments waiting to get to that state are when I am gritting my teeth! I hate cuffs or irons, as I love the feel and "completeness" of rope - I love to have that completely immobile feeling. Anyway, interesting points all. J |

Well explained MT...it's about the "journey" of being tied up with rope...and untied...I find it, when practised well by an experienced rigger...almost hypnotic...my most intense experiences of drifting into sub space have involved rope bondage.

I guess it begs the age old question, "How long is a piece of rope?"
