It’s a strange article in many respects. It is the writer’s opinion that she is totally unfit to be the First Minister of Scotland, yet last year she run Yousaf close in the final voting, taking 48% of the votes in the second round. Nothing much changes in a year with respect to personally held principles, so his Time's opinion is down to political reaction. The SNP looks like a closed shop with Swinney being supported by the present cabinet. Lot of political detritus flying around at the moment.

Kate is very intelligent, a Cambridge University graduate and a Chartered accountant, and was first appointed to ministerial office when she was only 26.

Her academic and professional background would make her excellent at budgets, economics and pragmatic strategy decision making. I expect she’ll get a big job if she supports Swinney and one to watch for the future...
It is an odd one I agree

I picked it up from Fraser Nelson's Twitter. He seemed to be more concerned about the reaction to it. He fundamentally disagrees with the writer but defends his right to say what he did

Forbes - to an extent anyway - may rise or fall dependent on the success (or otherwise) of the SNP going forward

Presumably they think Swinney a safe pair of hands in an election year.

This is what Nelson said

Odd to see Twittterstorm over this with folk saying 'why did The Times publish' and 'let's report a hate crime'

I disagree with Kenny but he makes his case with trademark eloquence and panache - and speaks for a great many. What's the point of columnists if not to spark debate?"

I like Nelson. I may not agree with quite a lot of his views but he is a fine journalist who does a really good job editing The Spectator
