Poshie's reply hits the nail on the head: some people like the whole process of being slowly restrained and immobilized in rope, others just want to be restrained, period. Rope bondage is for the former, the latter would be happier in cuffs or irons.
I am one of those who enjoy Japanese rope bondage and tying people up, and I love the whole process. It's inevitable to come across a tangled rope every now an then, but if it takes too long to get it ready, then you are doing it wrong. It happens occasionally, even to the best among us! I always advise against too long rope coils. My longest rope is 30 ft (10 m) long. Anything longer and it can easily become a tangled mess. When I run out of rope, a new length can be easily attached to its end, and proceed. Using separate sections also makes untying easier and faster! Some ropes tangle more easily than others: I'm not surprised that hemp is so popular, because it doens't tangle easily. Cotton is a real bitch, but man made fibres like polypropilene, are bondage-friendly and quite tangle-proof. Ultimately, if it's about the rope and the bondage, you have to find ways of making even the untying process, a fundamental part of the session. Teasing, tickling, trying nipple clamps and poking my specimens while untying it make for a delicious 2nd act to the bondage process |

Ah, well I am neither. As a pure "bottom" rather than a sub, I am not in scene until I am well and truly tied up...so the moments waiting to get to that state are when I am gritting my teeth! I hate cuffs or irons, as I love the feel and "completeness" of rope - I love to have that completely immobile feeling. Anyway, interesting points all. J |

Well explained MT...it's about the "journey" of being tied up with rope...and untied...I find it, when practised well by an experienced rigger...almost hypnotic...my most intense experiences of drifting into sub space have involved rope bondage.

I guess it begs the age old question, "How long is a piece of rope?"

Funny you say that, I've always said that I enjoy Shibari because I find it very relaxing. I get into a trance-like state myself when I'm tying somebody up, and in a good session, both participants are bound (ha, see what I did there?) by this mental state. It enhances and amplifies all physical sensations too.
