It is possible that some has tried to hack your account, but I would have expected a text or email to the alternative account.

When I have recently changed a device I allow access to my google account i get a text asking was this me yes / no

I checked my reefknot email account there has been no spam from you gmail so I would suspect some naught bot might have attempted a hack and not succeeded.

It may be worth a quit google search of the message you get, if there is some dodgy activity with gmail there will be something posted by someone.

Ultimately if you need to change the password, have your mobile and alternative email to hand, you will get a message on one of them to approve or code number to enter
